History of New Norcia
Bishop Salvado
New Norcia in Western Australia, was founded in by two Spanish Benedictine monks, Bishop Rosendo Salvado and Bishop Dom Joseph Serra who traveled to Australia to set up missions. They were granted 7, hectares of freehold land which they developed into the New Norcia Mission and a profitable farm. Eventually becoming one of the most successful missions in Australian history.
The town was named after Norcia, a town in the Umbria Province of Northern Italy in honour of the birthplace of the Order&#;s founder, St Benedict. Salvado&#;s original idea was to create a self-sufficient town based on Christian ideals and agriculture. In Bishop Salvado was appointed Abbot.
During the &#;s&#;s the mission flourished with the monks building a series of wells, breeding horses, producing silk & olive oil and growing grapes, almonds, dates & carob.
Divide Between Aboriginals and Christianity
Salvado and the monks worked closely with the Nyoongar people teaching them farming skills and supplying them with food. Salvado also wanted to find a common ground between the Aboriginal&#;s beliefs and his own Christian ones. He started by studying

The Story of New Norcia
New Norcia - Pre-history
Next to the famous Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia was the Benedictine monastery of San Martín Pinario. There, two young men had made their monastic profession, promising to live a fully monastic and obedient life. Following closure of the monasteries by the anti-clerical government in Spain in one of these men, Dom José Benito Serra, went to the renowned Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity of Cava, near Salerno in Italy. After a few years of waiting in vain for his own monastery to re-open, Dom Rosendo Salvado followed Serra to Cava.
In , and fired by missionary zeal, the two monks applied to the authorities in Rome to be missionaries and were assigned to the newly appointed first Bishop of Perth, Rt Rev John Brady. Brady led a large missionary party to Australia, reaching Perth in January Brady divided the WA Mission into three districts and it was to the Central District that the two Spanish Benedictines, a French Benedictine novice, Dom Léandre Fonteinne and an Irish catechist, John Gorman departed.

Salvado was an accomplished musician and organist, coming from a highly respected musical family. In he joined a missionary party and sailed to Fremantle, arriving in Upon his arrival, he made his way to the Victoria Plains, where on 1 March he established a mission for the training of Aboriginal people at New Norcia.
Not long after, faced with the threat of starvation, Salvado and an Aboriginal companion walked to Perth to raise monies to save the Mission. He gave a three-hour-long piano recital to a packed audience in the Old Court House in May and raised enough money to buy goods to take back to New Norcia.
Salvado worked with the Aboriginal people at New Norcia and shared their bush life, but also set about teaching them Christianity and how to farm the land. Salvado spent more time in Europe and then returned to Western Australia in where he became Lord Abbot of New Norcia. He died in
