Ali Shariati
Ali Shariati Mazinani () (Persian: علی شريعتی مزینانی) or Shariati was an IranianMuslimphilosopher, sociologist, poet and writer.
Shariati's life
Shariati was born in in Mazinan, Iran. He studied sociology in the University of Paris. He returned to Iran in When he returned to Iran, the Shah regime arrested and imprisoned him for political reasons. He was released in Shariati began teaching at the University of Mashhad. He began lecturing at the Hosseiniye Ershad institute in The Shah regime arrested him again. When he was freed in , he was not allowed to teach or publish anything. Shariati decided to leave the country for England. Three weeks later he died in Southampton under suspicious circumstances. He was buried in Damascus, Syria.

Ali Shariati, a towering intellectual and revolutionary figure in modern Iranian history, was born on 24 November in Mazinan, a small village near Mashhad, Iran. Raised in a devout and politically active family, Shariati’s father, Mohammad Taqi Shariati, was a prominent religious scholar and a staunch advocate of social reform. The younger Shariati was deeply influenced by his father’s teachings, which blended Islamic principles with modern social ideas. This early exposure to progressive religious thought laid the foundation for his later contributions as a thinker who sought to reconcile faith with modernity.
Shariati pursued higher education at the University of Mashhad, where he studied literature and sociology. It was here that his intellectual journey took a significant turn. His exposure to Western philosophy and the social sciences ignited his passion for understanding the world through both an Islamic and modernist lens. In his years at the Teachers Training College, he came into contact with youth who were from the lower economic strata of the society and tasted the poverty and hardship that existed.
At the age of eighteen, he started as a teacher and ever since had been a student as well as a teacher. After graduating from college in , on a scholarship he pursued graduate studies in France. Dr. Shariati, an honor student, received his doctorate in sociology in from Sorbonne University.
When he returned to Iran he was arrested at the border and imprisoned on the pretext that he had participated in political activities while studying in France. Released in , he began teaching again at Mashhad University. As a Muslim sociologist, he sought to explain the problems of Muslim societies in the light of Islamic principles-explaining them and discussing them with his students. Very soon he gained popularity with the students and different social classes in Iran. For this reason, the regime felt obliged to discontinue his courses at the university.
