Pandit Raghunath Murmu: his psyche behind creating the Ol Chiki script

I vividly remember it was a fine Monday morning when my doorbell rang. I ran to open the door, hoping it was a cousin, only to see a strange man standing with a letter in his hand. He asked for my mother and before I could answer, she was already there. I had just learnt about letters in school, so my curiosity was at its peak. I snatched the letter from my mother’s hand and tore it open, only to find rather uninteresting pieces of paper, with writing I had never seen or heard of. Sensing my confusion, my mother explained that the papers were part of a Santali newsletter written in the Ol Chiki script. My seven-year-old self wondered why I never knew about this. I scrambled through my Social Studies textbooks and general knowledge charts in utter confusion, wondering why my mother tongue wasn’t even mentioned in the books I was supposed to read? This question was among the several reasons why I took up the opportunity to write about Pandit Raghunath Murmu, the pioneer of the Santali language and literature.

Pandit Raghunath Murmu (May – February ) was an Indian writer and educator. He was the man to lend his voice to the Santhal tribe. Until the nineteenth century, Santali people had no written language and knowledge was transmitted orally from one generation to another. Later European researchers and Christian missionaries started to use Bengali, Odia, and Roman scripts to document. Raghunath developed the Ol Chiki script for the Santali language and enriched the cultural identity of the Santali society. He wrote many songs, plays, and school textbooks in Ol Chiki script. Santhals have adorned him with the title ‘Guru Gomke’, the great guru.
The celebration started with the garlanding of statues of tribal freedom fighters like Birsa Munda, and Laxman Nayak instituted at KISS-DU. Students greeted the guests, dignitaries, and participants by singing a song in the Santali language.

His noble works and fights for his own language have brought him many identities. Hailed as Guru Gomke, people do regard him as a godly figure. Even today, on the day of Guru Purnima, the Kapiburu locality near Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha gets crowded by people to pay homage to this iconic personality, Pandit Murmu. He is the one who has created the Ol Chiki script of the Santhali language.
he Ol Chiki script of the Santhali language is enriched with the cultural identity of the tribal community. He used to say, “our literature can’t progress without its own script”. The norms and standards set by him have become the traditional rituals for the santal community for which he is awarded with the position of God by the community. The script prescribed by him is still being followed by the Santhal population of Bangladesh, Nepal and India.
