Catalyst Fellowship

In response to the timely need for innovation in the world of theater, The Dramatists Guild Foundation has designed an opportunity for some of the most brilliant Black, Indigenous, Asian, and Latiné innovators of theater to radically imagine solutions to the equity, social justice, and change in theater.

The Catalyst Fellowship is the brainchild of the Dramatists Guild Foundation board member Branden Jacobs-Jenkins with research support and thought partnership from playwright, Nick Kaidoo. This unique fellowship was developed to create an opportunity to support dramatists that identify as the global ethnic majority who are interested in using their platform to incite political and social change in their communities.

Through this fellowship, the Dramatists Guild Foundation will award 10 dramatists a financial award of $30k each year over a period of 2-years totaling $60, for each fellow. With this financial support, we hope that each fellow can continue to address key issues around disrupting marginalization, inequity and disenfranchisement—and boldly create and pilot courageous ideas that transform theatre. These funds cannot be used toward productions or

New York, NY –  The Dramatists Guild Foundation (DGF) has announced its inaugural class of National Fellows. The historic Fellows program has expanded to have a virtual offering for playwrights, composers, lyricists, and librettists located across the United States.

The Fellows program has traditionally only been offered to dramatists based in the tri-state area who could attend writing workshops and mentorship sessions in person, but in DGF’s continued work to expand accessibility and resources for writers at all stages of their careers, the program will now offer a virtual option. Designed to eliminate historical barriers of entry, the Fellows program is a completely free program, hosted and designed by the Dramatists Guild Foundation.

This program has been championed by numerous generous donors, including support from the Jeffrey Seller Family Foundation. The DGF National Fellows Program Chairs are Bernardo Cubría, Playwriting Chair, and Christine Toy Johnson*, Musical Theatre Chair.

And I’m like, “Well, what are the rest of us supposed to do? How do we proceed? What are the steps that we need to take in order to get the experience that we need to be active in our field?” I feel like we don’t value art enough to create opportunities for people to actually pursue it. So, I thought, “Fuck it, I’ll just create one.”

Sarah Rebell:  After so many years of feeling that way, what led you to take the plunge and launch the fellowship?

Chisa Hutchinson:  It helps to be in a position where I’m constantly searching for funding. I do a lot of be
