Lebanese-Armenian fashion designer Krikor Jabotian started his atelier at the age of Six years on and he’s built a solid reputation for his luxurious haute couture designs that have just gone global. He sat down with LT to talk about inspiration, embroidery and that Regina King Emmy Award dress
Lebanese fashion designer Krikor Jabotian hit the international headlines in September when American actress Regina King was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in ABC’s American Crime. When she accepted the award at the Los Angeles ceremony, it was one of his dresses she was wearing – an elegant white ankle-length gown, embellished with pearls&#; at the after party she sported another of his designs. “We are thrilled to have our first Hollywood appearance by an award winner. The first day I didn’t really understand what was happening. The second day I understood how big this was,” Jabotian says, sitting in his Tabaris atelier. “It’s created a lot of exposure and buzz for us – a lot of people were requesting the dress afterwards.”

American actress Regina King was clearly delighted when she was awarded an Emmy last year for her role in ABC’s American Crime, but so too was the young Lebanese fashion designer Krikor Jabotian as King had selected one of his gowns for the occasion. The elegant white gown, entirely embellished with pearls, with its low-cut back and tulip-shaped skirt that stopped just short of her ankles, was Jabotian’s first couture creation on the Hollywood red carpet and it immediately generated some buzz around the young designer.
Like many of the now internationally recognized Lebanese designers — Elie Saab, Georges Hobeika, and Zuhair Murad — Jabotian seems to have an ingrained love for embroidered fabrics, and most of his exquisite haute couture collections focus heavily on using different types of embroideries — especially different threading patterns with sequins, semi-precious stones, and crystals woven throughout lace.

Ever since I was a kid my family knew that I was going to enter the world of art in a way or another, but through the years they found that it’s fashion that I specifically wanted to work with. A lot of things used to grab my attention, things that usually kids my age wouldn’t pay attention to, like for example the movement of my mum’s skirt, colour matching, fabrics.I would enquire about fabric because my grandmother used to sew a lot, and it was very intriguing for me. So I used to ask a lot of questions about textiles, textures, colours, and movements of skirts and the fall of fabric intrigued me a lot.
My mum was skeptical about why I would ask such questions, why I wasn’t like other kids. I was very introverted, always on my own, I would draw a lot and colour a lot. I used to like things kids my age wouldn’t care for. I started by drawing nature, and then after a couple of years I started drawing women, and then women wearing dresses, and lastly the dresses.
