The original name of Mahavira was Vardhamana. He was born at Kundagrama. His father Siddhartha was the Chief of his clan. Siddhartha had two sons and Vardhamana was the youngest of the two. He was born in B.C.
At the time of his birth the astrologers made a forecast that either he will be a great king or a great saint. Mahavira spent his early life in the royal luxuries and was married to a beautiful princess, Yashodhara.
A daughter was also born to Mahavira. It is said that parents of Mahavira were the followers of Parsva Nath, and Mahavira was greatly influenced by the teachings of Parsva Nath. He developed a bent towards meditation while he was still a child.
At the age of thirty when his parents had died he denounced the world with the permission of his elder brother. For about 13 months he wore clothes but subsequently he cast off his clothes and started living naked.
During the next 12 years he lived on extreme self-mortification. All sorts of living beings gathered and crawled round his body but he continued his meditation. During this period he did

Lord Mahavira is the twenty-fourth Tirthankar. He was born in B.C. at Kshatriyakund which was a part of the well known Vaishali republic. His fathers name was King Siddhartha and his mothers name was Queen Trishala. They were very religious people and were followers of Lord Parshvanath. Queen Trishala had fourteen dreams (some believe sixteen dreams) when she conceived Lord Mahavira. While she was pregnant, the prosperity of King Siddhartha grew. The parents attributed their success to the baby. So when the baby was born, he was named Vardhaman, which means continuously increasing.
He was very bold and while playing he once saved his friends from a snake. Another time, a heavenly angel joined them in the disguise of a young boy. According to the rules of the game, Vardhaman had a chance to ride on the boys back. While he was riding, the boy turned into a monster in order to scare him. Vardhaman however overcame the monster. The heavenly angel then appeared in his true form. He praised Vardhaman for his boldness and called him Mahavira meaning very brave.

Lord Mahavira was born at Kundalagrama (Vaishali district) situated close to Besadha Patti, 27 miles from Patna in modern day Bihar, India. His birthday is celebrated as Mahavira Jayanthi every year. He was more popularly known as "Vardhaman". It is due to the fact that, after Mahavira was born, his family prospered and got loads of wealth. People are of the belief that, when Mahavir Swami was born, he was bathed by Lord Indra with celestial milk. Being the son of King Siddartha, he lived his life like a prince.
