Louis Sullivan ()

Controversial filigree and haps and mishaps in the life of the doyen of post-structuralist critics, Louis Sullivan

Nobody illustrates the perilous fate of the idealist architect better than Louis Sullivan and few offer such a merry dance in interpretation.

The most precise definition of his personality comes from Kenneth Frampton: ‘metropolitan demiurge and Celtic mystic’; the most laconic via Leonardo Benevelo: ‘a little man in an impeccable brown suit’. But elsewhere is a wealth of adjectives: egotistical, remote, temperamental, abrupt, condescending, self-destructive, obstinate, outspoken, dandyish, drunk and (possibly) gay.

He was the pioneering ‘Lieber Meister’ for Frank Lloyd Wright, and a tragic hero who suffered a penniless death at 68 under a single light bulb in a shabby rooming house in It’s a story straight out of John Dos Passos: the life of an American hero, a life without a second act.

Wright deceived Sullivan by moonlighting while his employee, and then took his most useful ideas and privatised them. He’d had a drunken, despairing Sullivan thrown out of his club asking for change, but he lionised him in death. Sullivan was a handy prede

Louis Henry Sullivan was born in Boston. He studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for one year. After this, he worked as a draughtsman for architects Furness and Hewitt in Philadelphia and for William Le Baron Jenney in Chicago. In July Sullivan concluded his training at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris; he returned to Chicago a year later

In , he joined the office of Dankmar Adler (), who had emigrated from Germany in and was established as an architect in Chicago by In Sullivan became a full partner. Sullivan was the design partner, while Dankmar Adler was the engineer.

The auditorium itself is capable of seating more than 4, Sullivan's interior decoration is exceedingly interesting, of a feathery vegetable character, derived perhaps partly from the Renaissance in an arts and crafts spirit but at the same time pointing forward to the license of art nouveau. The tower on this building housed their offices.

His two most familiar skyscrapers, the Wainwright building, St. Louis (

As an architect, critic and mentor, Louis H. Sullivan had an impact on architecture that extends well beyond his work in Chicago. From the globally recognized phrase “form ever follows function” to the mentorship of a young Frank Lloyd Wright, Sullivan’s influence set in motion some of the most important ideas in modern architecture.

While working for various firms, Sullivan’s early years were marked by frequent changes to the course of his education. At the age of 16, he began his architectural studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. After only a year, Sullivan left MIT and went to work for the architectural firm of Furness and Hewitt in Philadelphia. Shortly thereafter, the economic panic of set in, causing work to slow and forcing Sullivan to find employment elsewhere.

Seeking new opportunities, Sullivan made the move to Chicago in His timing couldn’t have been better. The Great Fire of had left the city’s central commercial district in ruins. As Chicagoans recovered from the fire, Sullivan found work with prominent architect William Le Baron Jenney. After a few months with Jenney, Sullivan was still eager to continue his education; he’d soon
