శ్రీ గురజాడ అప్పారావు గారు తన రచనల ద్వారా సామాజిక చైతన్యం తెచ్చిన ఘనుడు! కన్యాశుల్కం నాటకంలో ఆయన సృష్ఠించిన గిరీశం, మధురవాణి, బుచ్చమ్మ, వెంకటేశం, రామప్పంతులు, అగ్నిహోత్రావధాన్లు, సౌజన్యారావు పంతులు లాంటి మొదలైన పాత్రలు కూడా అంతే ప్రఖ్యాతి పొందాయి. 'దేశమంటే మట్టికాదోయ్ దేశమంటే మనుషులోయ్' అని ఎలుగెత్తి చాటిన వైతాళికుడు ఆయన. సాంఘిక దురాచారాలైన బాల్య వివాహాలను, కన్యాశుల్కాన్ని ఖండించిన మహనీయుడు. కుల, మత, వర్గ విబేధాలను రూపుమాపేందుకు ఆయన చేసిన కృషి మరువరానిది.
శ్రీ గురజాడ న నేటి విశాఖ జిల్లాలోని రాయవరం గ్రామంలో జన్మించారు. తండ్రి వెంకట రామదాసు, తల్లి కౌసల్యమ్మ. పదేళ్ళ వరకు చీపురుపల్లిలో చదివారు. విజయనగరంలో బి.ఏ చదువుతున్నపుడు వాడుక భాషా ఉద్యమ నాయకుడు గిడుగు రామమూర్తి ఆయనకు సహాధ్యాయి. వారిద్దరూ ప్రాణస్నేహితులు. బెంగాలీ భాషకు ఠాగూర్ వలే, వీరుకూడా తెలుగు వ్యవహారిక భాషా ప్రచారానికి ఎనలేని కృషిచేసారు లో మహారాజ కాలేజి పాఠశాలలో ఉపాధ్యాయుడిగా చేరారులో అప్పలనరసమ్మ గారితో వివాహమైంది. లో డిప్యూటీ కలెక్టరు ఆఫీసులో హెడ్ క్లర్కుగా పనిచేసారులో రాజావారి సంస్థానంలో చేరారు. లో కళాశాలలో అధ్యాపక పదవిని నిర్వహించాడు. లో మద్రాసు యూనివర్సిటీ లోని బోర్డ్ ఆఫ్ స్టడీస్ లో సభ్యులయ్యారు.శ్రీ గిడుగు రామమూర్తి గారితో కలసి వాడుక భాషా
Gurajada Venkata Apparao () was a Telugu poet and writer of Andhra Pradesh, India. He wrote the first Telugu play, Kanyasulkam, which is often considered the greatest play in the Telugu language. Gurajada Apparao was an influential social reformer of his age and was lauded as Mahakavi, meaning "the great poet".
He frequently dabbled in poetry, and is credited with creating a new style of poetry in the Telugu Language. He also holds the titles Kavishekara and Abyudaya kavitha pithamahudu.
Sri Gurajada Apparao was a social reformer, poet, writer, philosopher, and a friend. He was born in Rayavaram of Visakhapatnam distt.. He graduated from the Maharaja's College (MR COLLEGE) of Vizianagaram, the so called VIDYANAGARAM of ANDHRA where he synthesized de novo the greatest of his writings which are superb, unforgettable, and immortal. "Desamante Mattikadoy - Desamante Manushuloy" has had been shacking the hearts of every Telugu soul, whether literate or illiterate.

గురజాడ అప్పారావు సంవత్సరంలో విశాఖపట్టణం జిల్లాలోని రాయవరం గ్రామంలో జన్మించారు.
ఆదునిక ఆంధ్ర కవితా పితామహుడు. ‘‘దేశమంటే మట్టికాదోయ్, దేశమంటే మనుషులోయ్’’ దేశభక్తి గీత రచయిత.
విజయనగరంలో చదివి పట్టభద్రులయ్యారు. విజయనగరం మహారాజావారి ఆస్థానంలో ఉద్యోగం చేశారు. ఆ రోజులలో గంజాం జిల్లాలోని పర్లాకిమిడిలో గిడుగు వెంకట రామమూర్తి పంతులు తెలుగు పుస్తకాలలో వాడుక భాష ఉండాలని ఒక ఉద్యమాన్ని నడిపారు. ఈ ‘‘వ్యావహారిక భాషా ఉద్యమం ’’ అప్పారావు గారికి నచ్చటంతో ఇతన వ్రాసిన పుస్తకాలలో వాడుక భాష ఉపయోగించారు. అవన్నీ బాగా ప్రచారం పొందాయి. ఆ రోజులలో డబ్బు తీసుకుని పసిపిల్లలను వృద్ధులకు ఇచ్చి పెళ్లిచేసే కన్యాశుల్కం అనే దురాచారం ఉండేది.
ఈ దురాచారాన్ని వ్యతిరేకిస్తూ ఈయన ‘‘కన్యాశుల్కం’’ అనే గొప్ప నాటకాన్ని వాడుక భాషలో వ్రాయటం జరిగింది. ఈ నాటకం ఇప్పటికీ తెలుగు భాషలో గొప్ప నాటకంగా పేరు పొందింది. బాల్యవివాహాలను వ్యతిరేకించే ‘‘పూర్ణమ్మ’’ కథ కూడా అప్పారావు రచనలలో గొప్పగా పేరుపొందింది.
ముత్యాల సరాలు, లవణ రాజు కథ, డామన్ – పితియస్ అన్న గేయ కథలు ఇతని ఇతర రచనలు. మీ పేరేమిటి, దిద్దుబాటు చిన్న కథలను రచించారు. తెలుగు నేలలో నవ్యాంధ్ర కవితా వైతాళికుడుగా ప్రసిద్ధి పొందిన శ్రీ గురజాడ అప్పారావు గారు నవంబర్ 30వ తేదీన అస్తమించారు.
