STALWARTS of South Africas music scene, the Soul Brothers have recorded over 30 albums since their formation in
Initially formed in KwaZulu Natal, the group have remained the slickest and most successful proponents of the mbaqanga sound which dominated South African urban music for over three decades
While their costume, choreography and some harmonies bear comparison to the American Soul music which inspired them, the group originated a sound and style which captivated South African audiences, most especially amongst migrant labourers who under Apartheid, were forced to leave rural homes to seek work in the cities.
The Soul Brothers themselves trod this path to Joburg, and it was this shared frame of reference which endeared the group to the massive working class audience of South African cities.
The band was built around the rhythm section comprising bassist Zenzele "Zakes" Mchunu, drummer David Masondo, and guitarist Tuza Mthethwa who first played together in the Groovy Boys?in Kwazulu Natal, and later as part of the Young Brothers?

The Life and Times of Soul Brothers
Sydney’s father had every album of the Soul Brothers. That had influence in making a young man to develop interest and understanding of the Mbaqanga music. In our telephonic interview recently when Sydney was asked what prompted him to write this book…
He said there are two incidents that opened his eyes and made him to take a decision to write a book seriously. After the only living member of the group Moses “The Black Moses” Ngwenya, the founding member, a master keyboardist, a composer of the band was mugged by criminals in but survived with injured fingers. And few months later another founding member David “Mdavu uyadavuza” Masondo passed on due to illness. An author realized after these two incidents that something has to be done to preserve the legacy of the band. Hence the book became an obvious choice.
The Soul Brothers which is affectionately called “Ogandaganda baseNingizimu Afrika” means “The Bulldozers of South Africa” was formed in by David Masondo, Tuza Mthethwa, Zenzele Mchunu from KwaZulu-Natal, American Zulu from Embalenhle in Mpumalanga and Moses Ngwenya from Johannesburg. The band was later joined by Mazwell Mngadi an

Formed in KwaZulu Natal in the mids, the band was built around the rhythm section of bassist Zenzele "Zakes" Mchunu, drummer David Masondo, and guitarist Tuza Mthethwa who first played together in the Groovy Boys in Kwazulu Natal, and later the Young Brothers. After moving to Johannesburg, keyboardist Moses Ngwenya joined to create the Soul Brothers, and David Masondo made the move from drums to lead vocals.
The combination of Masondo’s quavering soprano voice and Ngwenya’s percussive Hammond organ playing gave the Soul Brothers a unique and instantly recognizable sound. This core rhythm section was typically augmented with a brass section, guitars, vocal harmonies and dancers. The Soul Brothers visited UK and Europe in on their first international tour. The group’s manager Welcome Bhodloza Nzimande confirmed the incident on Sunday, saying the band is still in shock. Nzimande told Daily Sun: “We are shocked and saddened by the news of David’s death. We didn’t expect it so soon… His death has left a void in the mbaqanga music scene. He was one of the pioneers of the genre. May his soul rest in peace.”
David Masondo was born in Hammarsdale in Durban in He started with the Groovy Boys before co-founding the Soul Brothers in the mids, initially as the group’s drummer before becoming the group’s lead vocalist and the face of the band for the next four decades.
