I began the following transcription of W. Holman Hunt’s biography of Augustus Egg about 30 years ago when I encountered a copy of part of The Reader on microfilm. About a year ago I found two volumes of The Reader on the Hathi Trust, and Jacqueline Banerjee helped by finding the closing section on the Internet Archive. I am not sure that this is the entire biography, though Hunt's closing paragraphs make that seem likely. In transcribing the following text I have added images and paragraphing for easier reading.
William Holman Hunt published his “Notes on the Life of Augustus L. Egg” in several issues of the short-lived periodical The Reader, which James Bohn published in and which was edited successively by D. Masson, J. Dennis, and T. Bendyshe. This valuable article, which contains a great deal of information about the artist’s biography and works, begins rather eccentrically. Rather that simply explaining Egg’s parents gave him Leopold as a middle name after the Prince of Saxe-Cobourg. who married Princess Charlotte, he needlessly narrates the entire wedding, telling us, for example, that the Queen and women in the wedding party “reached Carlton House by the garden-entr

&#;EGG, AUGUSTUS LEOPOLD (–), subject painter, was the son of Egg the well-known gunmaker in Piccadilly, where he was born on 2 May Having mastered the first elements in drawing under Henry Sass, in Charlotte Street, Bloomsbury, he obtained admission as a student into the Royal Academy in , and appeared as an exhibitor first in that institution in , where he exhibited 'A Spanish Girl.' This was followed by 'Laugh when you can' in , and a scene from 'Henry IV' in But his first work of importance, 'The Victim,' was exhibited at Liverpool, and subsequently was engraved in the 'Gems of European Art.' He also contributed for many years to the Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street. He suffered from a weak constitution, and during a journey in Africa, undertaken for the benefit of his health, he died at Algiers on 26 March , and was buried there. Egg was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in , and an academician in , in which year he painted a scene from the 'Taming of the Shrew.' His portrait by Frith, engraved by J.
