Originally published in and republished in , The Gift of Pain: Why We Hurt and What We Can Do About It by Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancey was on my to-read list for a few years before something last year (I think it was a blog post I read) highlighted it on my radar again. I put it on my Christmas list, and thanks to my roommate, it was one of the books I unwrapped Christmas afternoon.

It wasn&#;t long before I started reading, and it didn&#;t take me long to finish. While I looked forward to learning from this book, I didn&#;t expect to be so engrossed in Brand&#;s biographical stories or challenged by his deep reflections about pain (not to mention caught up in the clear, descriptive writing style that brings every scene and idea to life).

I&#;m grateful that my journey with Lyme disease and other health issues over the years didn&#;t include the debilitating pain many of my friends face: joint pain, muscle pain, nerve pain, migraines, etc.

I have, however, experienced significant physical limitat

Paul Brand was a Christian doctor who dedicated his life and his skills to the people of India. He was the son of missionaries to India and, from the age of nine, was schooled and trained in England while his parents remained.

After Brand graduated as an orthopaedic surgeon, he was recruited to serve at the Christian Medical College in Vellore. However, history remembers him most for his work at a nearby sanatorium for victims of Hanson’s Disease &#; leprosy.

Little was known or understood about the crippling effects of leprosy on its victims. Brand realized that some of the same techniques used to rehabilitate the motor functions of victims of diseases such as polio held promise for treating leprosy.

After a year of research and study, Brand began a series of surgeries on Krishnamurthy, a young man whose hands were completely atrophied and useless, his fingers curled into a claw position. Patiently, over time, Brand split moved healthy muscles and tendons to serve in place of paralyzed muscle. The claw gradually was restored to a working hand.

A few short months after the final operation was complete, Krishnamurthy returned, and there was little joy in him. He was in po

In the Likeness of God: The Dr. Paul Brand Tribute Edition of Fearfully and Wonderfully Made and In His Image

    April 3,
I've been reading this in small doses for a long time, because there's so much depth and wisdom here. This particular edition (which I read on my Kindle) was actually a special edition combining two of Brand and Yancey's co-authored works: FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE and IN HIS IMAGE.

Dr. Paul Brand ()was a world-renowned hand surgeon, leprosy physician, missionary and humanitarian who caught the attention of -- and became mentor to -- Christian writer/apologist Philip Yancey. Their relationship in producing this book was best described by Yancey himself: "As a journalist, I gave words to his faith. In exchange, he gave faith to my words."

I'm sure that it was especially meaningful to me because of having studied human anatomy in grad school. Others might get bogged down in the medical details, but I loved the way Brand brought the physical and spiritual worlds together as he reflected on the amazing human body and related it to the analogy, often used in the Bible, of Christ as the Head of the Body representing the Church. As Yancey reflects, this likene
