Jack meets Joan and has drinks until 3 am many times until they go their different ways, but every time they meet she looks serene and healthy, squalor and troubles never faze her and always wearing black like a widow. Her boyfriends are always troubled and she is by to help them, with her quite ways. Jack has been to her place witnessing Joan's distressed men and was happy to escape. I was thinking that she was just very friendly wanting to help these poor souls. Jack gets married and has a baby, things look good for him but then after 3 years, they divorce. War calls him to action,
The books have been well reviewed in all the important places, and most all the reviewers raise the issue of the relationship between an authors personal life and his or her , of course, focus on Cheevers alcoholism and his bisexuality, as well as his generally boorish behavior to his wife and acquaintances, which makes the LA Times reviewer, Susan Salter Reynolds, suggest that it may not be a good idea to read the biography alongside an authors work.
This is the issue I would like to raise with this been educated in the Formalist tradition, my own view is that I do not need, nor even necessarily want, to know anything about the authors my opinion, an author may draw from his or her own life when writing, but other factorshis or her reading, use of language, knowledge of the short fiction tradition, etc.are more i

Torch Song by John Cheever,
The magic trick:
Stealthily approaching the protagonist’s true conflict – and the story’s true themes – to the point of misleading the reader along the way
I cant recall ever not enjoying a John Cheever story I read.
But Torch Song stands out for me even among those enjoyable reading experiences. I felt like it was one of the best stories Id read in a long, long time. Its a stunner.
It has a weird feel from the start. Its clearly based in straight realism, yet the reader notices some oddities. Were moving quickly through our protagonists life with surprising choices. We keep getting paragraph after paragraph about his friendship with this certain woman. Meanwhile, major life events like new jobs and how he met his wife or that they got married flash by in mere sentences.
So, we think, this isnt necessarily a biography of him; its more a biography of the long-term friendship with this woman. OK, that makes sense.
But thats not quite right either.
The story isnt exploring what any of these incidents – times when he runs into this woman on the street; memories of attending parties at her hou
John Cheever is famous for his artful midcentury short stories of suburban angst, and somehow became a comical figure ripe for puncturing. The root cause is probably a toss-up between his closeted bisexuality and the insistence with which he was taught to a generation of high school and college students, but one episode of Seinfeldalso managed to do a lot of damage. I've always found Cheever a mixed bag and haven't read him that much, but when he's good he's good. This is one of his most anthologized stories. Published in , it starts 10 years earlier, when Jack Lorey and Joan Harris, who are both from the same town in Ohio, happen to move to New York at the same time. In their first year they see a lot of one another, meeting for dinner or drinks or at parties. It's never a romantic involvement, but more the kind of alliance young people make when they are alone and new to a big city. After the first year they see less of one another, but over the years of the story they always seem to stay in touch one way or another. Among other things, World War II intrudes on their lives and then ends. Both have comically inept love lives. At
