Who Was Saint Abigail?

Saint Abigail is an Irish saint from the 5th century, recognized in the Orthodox and Catholic Churches for her use of herbal medicine to heal people, her skills as a beekeeper and for protecting her village from the plague. She is also widely respected as the sister and disciple of St. Abban.

St. Abigail&#;s Gailic name is Gobnait, and in England she is known as St. Deborah, denoting honeybee. A popular story surrounding Saint Abigail&#;s ability with bees is one of her chasing off a brigand with an angry swarm of bees, forcing him to return the cattle he had stolen. Her church and nunnery were located near Muscraige. In Ireland they still celebrate her feast day on Feb. 11 as a national feast, while many other recognitions of saints are local only. One of the characteristics of the religious order she started is that they went around healing people&#;s ailments. It is assumed by most sources that she did this with various herbal remedies in which she used her honey. Some sources also recognize the Abigail in the Old Testament as a saint as well. What is St Abigail the Patron Saint Of?

St Abigail (also called St Gobnait or St Deborah) was a sixth century Irish saint. She cared for the sick and founded a convent of nuns. She is the patron saint of honeybees, beekeepers, and ironworkers.

Abigail was born in County Clare, Ireland, in the s.

Her family was contentious and argued constantly, so Abigail fled to a tiny island Inis Oírr of the Aran Islands.

But an angel appeared to her and told her to look for nine white deer grazing, and that is where she would ultimately die and be resurrected on the Last Day.

Abigail searched the southern coast of Ireland for this sign of deer and now a pilgrimage route marks her path, which has water wells and churches along it.

Abigail discovered the nine deer in Ballyvourney, County Cork (now called St. Gobnet’s Wood).

She dedicated herself to helping the sick and needy, and her brother St Abban aided her in founding a new religious

St. Gobnata (Feast Day - February 11)

Saint Gobnata (or Gobnait, Gobnet, Deborah, Abigail) was born in County Clare of Ireland at the end of the fifth, or the beginning of the sixth century. Later she fled to the Aran Islands to escape from some enemy. An angel appeared to her one day and told her to leave that place, for it was not to be the place of her resurrection, and to keep walking until she found nine white deer.

She saw three white deer at Clondrohid, County Cork, and decided to follow them. Then at Ballymakeera, she saw six white deer. Finally, at Ballyvourney she came upon nine white deer grazing in a wood. There she was given land donated by the O'Herlihy family for a women&#;s monastery by her spiritual father Saint Abban of Kilabban, County Laois (March 16), and he installed her as abbess. Excavations in proved that indeed there had been an early Christian settlement on the site.

Saint Gobnata was renowned for her gift of healing, and there is a story of how she kept the plague from Ballyvourney. She is also famous for her skill as a bee-keeper (Gobnata means "Honey Bee", which is the equivalent of the Hebrew "Deborah"). One day, Saint Gobnata was w

This ancient holy well and graveyard were, for a number of years the home of Saint Gobnait after whom the townland of Kilgobinet is named. John J. Kavanagh wrote an extensive article about both in his book &#;Kilshannig and Surrounds&#; published in and much of our knowledge stems from his research and also from stories and legends handed down through generations.

Some further information has come to light in more recent times. Such as the possible existence of an oratory/dwelling in the North Western corner of the graveyard. This graveyard and the one in Newberry (Kilshannig) were the only ones in the parish until when new graveyards were purchased in Bweeng and Glantane which are parish owned.

It also transpires there is a Harry Clarke stained glass window to St. Gobnait in the Honan Chapel attached to UCC.
