Mariano Rajoy
Mariano Rajoy Brey (Santiago de Compostela, March 27, ) is a Spanish politician of the Popular Party, sixth president of the Government of Spain after the transition, between and In the He currently works as a commercial registrar.
Rajoy was born in Santiago de Compostela into a family of lawyers. He has a law degree from the University of Santiago de Compostela. At the age of twenty-three, he passed the opposition to the Corps of Property and Commercial Registrars of Spain, thus becoming the youngest registrar in Spain to date. His first political position, when he was a member of Alianza Popular, was a seat on the Parliament of Galicia in He has held numerous positions since then, both in Galicia and in the two governments of José María Aznar. He has been Minister and Vice President of the Government five times between and In he was proposed by Aznar as his successor at the head of the Popular Party, a position to which he was elected by the party in September of that same year. He was leader of the parliamentary opposition during the two terms ( and ) of the socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

Mariano Rajoy pasó su infancia y adolescencia en tierras gallegas y leonesas. A member of what became the conservative Popular party (PP), he was elected a regional deputy at age Elected to the Cortes in , Rajoy served successively as minister of public administration, education and culture, and the interior under Prime Minister Jose María Aznar (–) and was chosen by Aznar as his successor. The PP lost the elections of and , but in voters ousted the ruling Socialists, blaming them for Spain's economic woes, and Rajoy became prime minister with a sweeping parliamentary majority. Continuing economic woes led to significant PP losses in elections in and , and Rajoy was unable to form a minority government until the Socialists acquiesced in Oct., After the PP was fined in following a corruption trial, he lost a confidence vote and was succeeded as prime minister by Socialist leader Pedro Sánchez; Rajoy subsequently resigned as party leader.
