Biography

Professor Ghulam Azam is a politician, writer and thinker from Bangladesh. For decades he served as a leading political leader of Bangladesh and authored many books on Islam, politics and social justice.

Having had an active political career until his retirement, became the subject of a sustained propaganda campaign led by the current Awami League government. He was arrested on 11 January on trumped allegations of war crimes that he has always denied and for which no proof exists. Following a discredited trial replete with flaws and irregularities, Prof Ghulam Azam was convicted on 15 July and sentenced to imprisonment for 90 years. Prof Ghulam Azam was born in 7th November&#; at his maternal gandfather&#;s Laxmibazar home in Dhaka. He hails from a well-respected family of religious scholars. Laxmibazar is a well-known hub of spiritual practice and his maternal grandfather Shah Sayed Abdul Monaem was the Shah Shaheb (spiritual leader) at that time. His ancestoral home is Maulvi Bari (house of religious scholars), Birgaon village, Nabinagor sub-district, district of Brahminbaria. His great grandfather, Munshi Shahabuddin, was known as the most prominent religious scholar on the east of the Meghna River.
Prof Azam’s father was Maolana Ghulam Kabir and mother was Sayeda Ashrafunnisa. In his father purchased land in Moghbazar, Dhaka; Prof Azam has been resident there since. His father was an Islamic and modern man. He was the teacher of a high school and also the marriage registrar (Kazi) of Dhaka city.
Prof Azam has 3 brothers and 5 sisters (1 brother & 1 sister remain living), and he is the eldest. He and his siblings displayed exceptional academic excellence. He was consistently among the highest achieving from his academic peers and went on to complete a degree in Arabic, English and Political Science

Professor Ghulam Azam is a renowned political leader in Bangladesh. He is held in great respect by many Bangladeshis but has been subject to a relentless campaign against his reputation, which he believes is politically motivated. He was the prime organiser of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh (now Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami) and one of the key players of historic events of the nation including the Language Movement and the movement for democracy in the sixties and eighties. He presented the ‘Caretaker Government’ formula which became a foundation stone of Bangladesh’s democracy, though the currently ruling Awami League government has recently abolished it.

Prof Azam was born on November 7, at Lakxmi Bazar Shah Shaheb Bari in Dhaka, the house of his maternal grandfather, the late Shah Shaheb. He received his Masters in political science from Dhaka University. He was a popular student leader during his student life.
