Griffiths Mxenge: A Short Biography ‘They can kill hundreds of Mxenges and the struggle for liberation will not stop…’ These were the defiant words of the widow of Griffiths Mxenge, a former anti-apartheid activist, Robben Island detainee and human rights lawyer. Mxenge’s death at the hands of apartheid security policemen has been well documented, but his life and specifically his contribution to a democratic South Africa, needs to be narrated more fully. Griffiths Mxenge, affectionately known as GM to his friends, was born on 27 February in Rayi Village. The latter is a small village hidden from the national road to Grahamstown, about five kilometers from King William’s Town. He was the eldest of five children of parents of humble means, Mr and Mrs Johnson Pinti Mxenge. He attended Forbes Grant High School in Ginsberg and matriculated at Newell High in Port Elizabeth in He believed that he embarked on a life of service when he joined the ANC at a young age. Griffiths’ political convictions were strengthened at the University of Fort Hare where he studied law. Griffiths Mlungisi Mxenge, the eldest son of Johnson Pinti and Hannah Nowise Mxenge, was born in His parents were well-respected peasant farmers of Rayi, a small rural settlement located five kilometres from King Williams Town, in the Eastern Province (now Eastern Cape). After Mxenge’s primary education at a local school, he obtained his secondary education at Forbes Grant Secondary School in Ginsburg, King Williams Town. In , he matriculated from Newell High School also in Ginsburg. In , he completed a BA degree at the University of Fort Hare majoring in Roman Dutch Law and English.
At Fort Hare Mxenge joined the Youth League of the African National Congress (ANCYL). After obtaining his BA degree, he registered for the LLB degree at the University of Natal.
His LLB studies were interrupted in , when he was detained for days and later convicted under the Suppression of Communism Act for his political activities in the ANC. He served a two-year imprisonment term on Robben Island.
After his release from Robben Island, in , he was served with a two-year banning order, which was followed by intermittent detentions including days in solitary conf

Mlungisi Griffiths Mxenge was born in in King Williams Town. He was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) from the mids when he was a BA student at the University of Fort Hare. He later studied for an LLB degree at the University of Natal.
His LLB studies were interrupted when he was convicted of being a member of the ANC (after it was banned in ) and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on Robben Island. He returned to complete his degree and went on to become a well-known civil rights lawyer who fearlessly defended the victims of the apartheid regime despite being harassed, detained and banned on frequent occasions. Griffiths Mxenge was a courageous attorney who became a significant threat to the ruling white government when he began practicing law in Durban from He and his wife Victoria successfully defended black political activists in Apartheid courts and became leading figures in mass campaigns against some of the racist regimes most repressive laws.
He was an ANC member since the mids and was detained for days in A year later Mxenge was convicted under the Suppression of Communism Act and spent three years on Robben Island before being placed under banning orders.
He was most notably the instructing attorney in the Bethal Treason Trial, where he defended 18 members of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) who were jailed for inciting a revolution and playing a role in the Soweto Uprising.
