Hodder & Stoughton buys rugby memoir by Ian Robertson
Hodder & Stoughton has acquired world rights to a memoir by rugby commentator and former international player Ian Robertson, who retires this autumn.
Rugby: Talking a Good Gamewill be published on 15th November (h/b, ).
Robertson, a former fly-half for Scotland who started working as a commentator almost 50 years ago, will look back on his broadcasting career, during which he covered nine British and Irish Lions tours and eight World Cups.
The commentator has previously written more than 30 books and a number of biographies, including those of Bill Beaumont, Andy Irvine, and actor Richard Burton.
Roddy Bloomfield, sports editor at Hodder & Stoughton, struck the deal with the author. He said: "Having already had the fun of working with Ian Robertson on several of his successful books on rugby, I couldnt be more pleased to know that his highly entertaining autobiographical book will be published by Hodder this autumn."
Fanatical dedication, fierce determination and a brilliant natural talent have established Ian William Robertson as one of the most successful international sportsmen this country has produced.
His uncompromising search for perfection in the rugged arena of Rugby Union often plunged him into bitter controversy. At times he was justifiably ranked among the 'Superbrats' of international sport. On other occasions he was a humble, self-effacing man who would sacrifice anything for team and country.
Above all he had a 'professional' approach in one of the toughest amateur sports in the world.
His international career has come to an end - painfully halted under a bone- jarring tackle playing for Zimbabwe Rhodesia against Transvaal at Salisbury in The injury has proved critical to his international career and with his broken wrist still not wholly mended, it seems unlikely that Robertson will play first-class rugby again.
Another factor persuaded him to retire.
After having played in five internationals for South Africa against France and New Zealand, playing Test rugby is no longer the most important thing in his life.
"The most important day of my life was when 1 married my
Ian Jeffry Robertson
Ian Robertson was a tall, fast and lean fullback/winger who enjoyed one season in Wallaby gold. A point-scoring phenomenon for his Eastwood club, Robertson was born in Sydney and educated at Marsden High School.
In Robertson was selected in a powerful Sydney side to take on Japan. Starting on the left wing, Robertson set the trend when he scored from a try from the first ruck after just 30 seconds. It was a sensational start for Robertson who went on to score four tries in the match. That effort saw him called up to make a Test debut against Japan at Ballymore and he celebrated with two tries. He acquitted himself well, gathered in some challenging passes one of which he dragged down single-handed to race away and score the first of his two tries.
Unfortunately Robertson missed selection for the Sixth Wallabies when Monaro fullback Mick Fitzgerald played strongly in the final trial to join Laurie Monaghan, Paddy Batch and John Ryan among the outside backs in the squad.
Highlights
Robertson won his first Test cap on the left wing in the 1st Test victory over Japan in Brisbane. He retained his spot for the 2nd Test, win at the S.C.G.
Anthony Morris Frederick Abrahams
Tony Abrahams was an athletic lock forward who played three Test for the Wallabies but is just as well remembered for his leading activist active role in the anti-apartheid movement that famously promoted a boycott of the Springbok tour. Widely condemned at the time, along with fellow players Jim Boyce, Paul Darveniza, Terry Forman, Barry McDonald, Jim Roxburgh and Bruce Taafe, Abrahams proved to be a man well ahead of his time.
As a footballer, Abrahams impressed as a vigorous front of the lineout jumper with a safe pair of hands and a resolute dedication to training. Born in Sydney, Abrahams attended Cranbrook School where he played in the school’s 1st XV and Associated Schools’ 1st XV in After graduation Abrahams entered the University of Sydney and undertook an Arts/Law degree. He played his club rugby for the University under three very influential coaches - Dick Tooth, John Solomon and David Brockhoff.
In Abrahams made his senior representative debut for New South Wales against Queensland but spent the next few seasons biding his time behind incumbent Wallaby locks Peter Crittle and Rob Heming. In , Abrahams partnered John Weber in th
