Story of Prophet Abraham (Hazrat Ibrahim)

Stories/Life of Messengers of Allah are certainly always a good example for our life today. So learn to understand the various wisdom of their life would be very useful for us.

Ibrahim, known as Abraham in the Hebrew Bible, was given the title ‘ خليل الله’ KHALILULLAH’, which means ‘the friend of Allah’. Ibrahim (A.S.) was the forefather of many great Prophets and is held in high esteem by all the major revealed religions i-e Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Ibrahim (A.S.) belongs to the 25 prophets mentioned in the Quran. He is also among the five prophets of Ulul’azm (Arch-Prophets) as these five prophets have books and divine religious laws. These five prophets of Allah are Noah [Nuh (A.S.)], Abraham [Ibrahim (A.S.)], Moses [Musa (A.S.)], Jesus [Esa (A.S.)], and Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.).

Ibrahim (A.S.) is mentioned by name 69 times in Quran.

There are different narrations, by different Islamic Scholars, about the age of Ibrahim (A.S.). Some say that he lived for years, some say he lived on earth for years and some says that Ibrahim’s (A.S.) age was years. However, all narrations suggest that Ibrahim (A.S.) liv

Stories in the sacred texts of Judaism, Christianity and Islam teach us about the awesome power of God. From them we can learn lessons applicable in any era; human traits have remained the same over several millennia.

Abraham in the Bible

Prophet Abraham is a biblical figure that all three great monotheistic religions hold in high esteem; they are collectively Abrahamic faiths.

Abraham in the Biblical narrative is promised by God that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky; and in the 21st century more than three billion people cite Abraham as a patriarch of their religion.

However the biblical narrative of Abraham is distinctly different from what we understand from the Quran and the authentic traditions of Prophet Muhammad.

In much the same way as the early Christians, Prophet Muhammad and his followers did not believe they were starting a new religion.

They believed that God had revealed sacred texts before the Quran but they had been corrupted; and Prophet Muhammad, like Jesus before him, was to lead the people back to pure monotheism.

It was only after the Christians and Jews failed to accept Prophet Muhammad’s teaching that they beg

The Story of Abraham (part 1 of 7): Introduction

One of the prophets given the most attention in the Quran is the prophet Abraham.  The Quran tells of him and his unwavering belief in God, first calling him to reject his people and their idolatry, and later to prove true to various tests which God places before him.

In Islam, Abraham is seen as a strict monotheist who calls his people to the worship of God alone.  For this belief, he bears great hardships, even disassociating himself with his family and people through migration to various lands.  He is one who fulfills various commandments of God through which he is tested, proving true to each one.

Due to this strength of faith, the Quran attributes the one and only true religion to be the "Path of Abraham", even though prophets before him, such as Noah, called to the same faith.  Because of his tireless act of obedience to God, He gave him the special title of "Khaleel", or beloved servant, not given to any other Prophet before.  Due to the excellence of Abraham, God made prophets from his progeny, from them Ishmael Isaac, Jacob (Israel) and Moses, guiding people to the truth.

I have personally read each of the following biographies of Prophet Muhammad. Some are certainly better than others.

One should also be aware that there are many more books of seerah (biography of the Prophet) that I have not yet read. If you have read another and would like to share what you thought of it, please drop a comment to this entry so others can read your recommendation.

1- Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources by the late Dr. Martin Lings

This is arguably one of the very best and most approachable biographies on the Prophet. This book reads more like a novel; it’s fast moving and always interesting.

At the same time, Dr. Lings attempted to make an accurate telling based on the earliest sources. One may also be interested to know that it was during the research for this book that Dr. Lings accepted Islam.

2- Muhammad the Prophet by Maulana Muhammad Ali

This book is one of my personal favorites. Written by an esteemed Muslim from Lahore, Pakistan, this small book is packed with information.

It is interesting to note that while the author attempts to give an accurate portrayal, you will not find much mention of supposedly miraculo
