Martin Luther King, Jr.
"The fight to make the Martin Luther King Jr. birthday a holiday took 32 years, a lot of campaigning, and guest appearances including Stevie Wonder, Ted Kennedy, and the National Football League.
King’s birthday was finally approved as a federal holiday in , and all 50 states made it a state government holiday by Officially, King was born on January 15, in Atlanta. But the King holiday is marked every year on the third Monday in January.
The King Center in Atlanta has a detailed chronology of how the efforts, starting shortly after King’s death in , paid off in the long run. It wasn’t an easy task for holiday supporters, who had to push hard in Congress to get the federal holiday created. A second battle took place to get individual states to also recognize the holiday, with often emotional disagreements in two states.
Today, the King holiday serves multiple purposes: It honors the total legacy of King; focuses on the issue of civil rights; highlights the use of nonviolence to promote change; and calls people into public service."

There is a Balm in Gilead: The Cultural Roots of Martin Luther King, Jr
The sources of Martin Luther King, Jr., 's phenomenal and prophetic impact on life in America and beyond have never been adequately understood. In this path-breaking volume, Lewis Baldwin traces King's vision and activism not to his formal philosophical and theological development but directly to his roots in Southern black culture, where King spent most of his 39 years.
King's appropriation of the Bible, Gandhi, American participatory democracy, Boston personalism, and the theologies of Reinhold Niebuhr and the Social Gospel makes sense, Baldwin argues, only against his visceral and abiding identification with black culture and the black Christian tradition. Working directly with the trove of King's sermons, speeches, and unpublished papers, Baldwin has reconstructed the pain and joy, the defeat and triumph King experienced in his formative family relationships, in the black church, in his childhood and education, in his marriage and children, in segregated black Atlanta, and in his leadership of America's civil rights movement.
Baldwin's through research and engaging writing finally give us wha
In order to move toward healing for all of us, we, too, need to demonstrate a cleansing. I’m referring to basic cleaning. We need to wash our hands. I know it sounds basic but in order for us to get beyond this coronavirus, we’ve got to get clean.
I can remember as a kid, we’d play outside, touching everything on the playground: the swings, the seesaw, the slides, fitness equipment, basketballs, baseballs, and footballs, picking up frogs and fish, and then run inside the house. We’d start doing the dance. Dash into the bathroom. And then try to make it to the refrigerator or in the pantry for snacks and my mother would have a fit. “You need to wash your hands before you do anything.”
It’s that basic.
Let’s admit that sometimes the most basic solutions are disregarded. Washing your hands correctly (or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer) is the most effective thing you can do to protect yourself against a number of infectious diseases, such as influenza (the “flu”), the common cold, and the coronavirus.
