Frederik Willem de Klerk (18 March – 11 November ) was a South Africanpolitician.[1] He was the president of South Africa from to In , he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace with Nelson Mandela.[2] They were given the prize for peacefully ending apartheid and setting up a new government in South Africa. From to he was vice president of South Africa. In , he retired from politics. In , he left the New National Party, when it became known that it wanted to unite with the African National Congress to form a single party.

De Klerk studied to be an attorney. He finished his studies in As a student, he joined the National Party. After obtaining his degree, he was their legal counsel, until From his first marriage with Marike Willemse he has three children. Since , he has been married to Elita Georgiades.

FW de Klerk was born in Johannesburg in He is the son of Johannes de Klerk () and Hendrina Cornelia de Klerk (), who died just four months before the death of his former daughter Marike Willemse and his brother to Wimpie de Klerk (). His family, whose name comes from the French surname "Le Clerc," "Le Clercq" or "de Clercq" is of Huguenot origin.

FW DE KLERK BIOGRAPHY

Frederik Willem (FW) de Klerk was born in Johannesburg on 18 March , the son of Senator Jan De Klerk, a senior Cabinet Minister. His school years were spent mainly in Krugersdorp, where he matriculated at Monument High School.

He attended the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and graduated In with BA and LLB degrees (cum laude). During his university years he was actively involved in student affairs.  

After finishing his studies Mr De Klerk joined a firm of attorneys in Vereeniging that he helped to develop into one of the leading law firms outside South Africa’s major metropolitan areas. At the same time he played a prominent role in numerous community activities. In he was offered the Chair of Administrative Law at Potchefstroom University, but had to decline because of his decision to enter active politics.  

In November he was elected as Member of Parliament for Vereeniging. In and shortly after his 42nd birthday, after only five and a half years as a back bencher, he was appointed to the Cabinet. During the following 11 years he was responsible for the following portfolios consecutively:

Frederik Willem de Klerk (born March 18, ) was State President of South Africa from September to May , and leader of the National Party from February to September De Klerk is best known for ending apartheid, South Africa's racial segregation policy, and transforming South Africa into a democracy by allowing the country's black majority to have voting rights.
