Unlike our 21st-cen­tu­ry cat memes and oth­er such online feline-based enter­tain­ments, children’s author Eulalie Osgood Grover’s work, Kit­tens and Cats: A First Read­er was intend­ed to edu­cate.

Its relat­ed poems will almost cer­tain­ly strike those of us whose under­stand­ing of feline atti­tude has been shaped by LOL­Cats, Grumpy Cat, the exis­ten­tial Hen­ri, Talk­ing Kit­ty Cat’s acer­bic Sylvester, and the mor­dant s TV spokescat Mor­ris as sweet to the point of sick­ly. But it boasts six hun­dred vocab­u­lary words, a rhyme struc­ture that pro­motes read­ing aloud, and a note to teach­ers with sug­ges­tions for class­room activ­i­ties.

Grover explained how her feline cast of char­ac­ters would win over even the most reluc­tant read­er, inspir­ing “much the same delight to the lit­tle read­er of juve­nile fic­tion, as do adven­ture and romance to the grown-up read­er”:

Eulalie Osgood Grover was born on June 22, in Mantorville, Minnesota. She authored the “Sunbonnet Babies” series, starting with The Sunbonnet Babies’ Primer, which was published in The books were based around a word vocabulary and included songs which were used in schools throughout the United States. Her illustrator for the Sunbonnet series, Bertha L. Corbett, later Bertha Corbett Melcher, studied in Philadelphia under Howard Pyle. In , Grover wrote a second series, The Overall Boys. She published twenty-seven books, including Sunbonnet Babies in Holland () and The Overall Boys in Switzerland (), drawing from her travels in Europe. These books were used by second and third grade students as geography textbooks. Starting in , she wrote the first three volumes in The Art-Literature Reader series published by Atkinson, Mentzer & Grover. She also edited a book of nursery rhymes, Mother Goose: The Original Volland Edition (). She died in Winter Park, Florida on December 18,
