NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates to stand down
Chris Keates is to step down as general secretary of the NASUWT teaching union after 15 years in the role, Schools Week has learned.
In an email to staff, seen by the newspaper, Keates confirmed she told the union’s national executive on June 7 that she will not be standing again for re-election.
It follows a period of unrest at England’s second largest teaching union, which has seen repeated strikes and other industrial action by its own staff over changes to their pensions.
In January, the union was also ordered to reinstate a sacked organiser after he accused Keates of lying, wasting police time and “acting like a despot”.
“This has been a very difficult decision for me, as I have had a lifetime of being involved with this great union, fifteen of them as its general secretary,” Keates said in her email to staff.
“However, I do feel the time is right for the NASUWT to have a general secretary to take the union forward into the next chapter in its history.”

NASUWT boss allowed to stay in post
The leader of the NASUWT teaching union has been allowed to stay in her post after a tribunal rejected a call for an enforcement order to remove her “forthwith”.
At a Certification Office tribunal hearing earlier this month, the union conceded that there had been a breach of trade union law because Chris Keates had remained in post as general secretary beyond five years without an election.
However, the union argued that Ms Keates was now only “acting general secretary” until a replacement could be found.

The union’s former Northern Ireland president, Susan Parlour, who brought the complaint, had told the tribunal that Ms Keates had merely “rebranded herself”.

And representing Ms Parlour, former regional organiser at the union Richard Harris called for the enforcement order to be made “forthwith”, stating that the union had been informed almost a year before the end of Ms Keates’ term in office of the need

TEACHING union NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates is to step down from her role after 15 years.
Ms Keates told staff in an email that it was a “difficult” decision for her to make, but felt that it “is the right time for the NASUWT to have a general secretary to take the union forward into the next chapter in its history.”
Union president Dave Kitchen said in a statement today: “After 15 years as NASUWT general secretary, and far longer as an NASUWT member of staff and union activist, Chris Keates has advised the national executive of her retirement plans and that she will not be standing again for re-election.
“The process of electing her successor has started and pending the outcome of that process, and in the interim, Chris remains in post, so for the present it is business as usual.
“At the appropriate time, tribute will be paid to Chris for the work she has done and her years of service to the NASUWT and its members. Consequently, no further statements will be made at this time.”

The NASUWT teaching union will face a hearing to determine whether it broke the law by allowing Chris Keates to overstay her term as general secretary, Schools Week can reveal.
The Certification Officer, which oversees unions in England, has ruled the union&#;s case should be listed for a formal hearing after receiving allegations that the union broke the law by failing to hold an election for Keates&#;s replacement before her five-year term came to an end.
It has also emerged that Keates could continue to serve as &#;acting general secretary&#; of the union, a role to which she was recently appointed, until next spring while her successor is chosen.
