Chintamoni Kar

Chintamoni Kar was born in in Kharagpur, West Bengal. Kar trained at the Indian Society of Oriental Art run by Abanindranath Tagore. He was taught to sculpt by Giridhari Mahapatra and Victor Giovanelli. He moved to Paris in , where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière before moving back to India.

Kar taught at the University of Calcutta and the Delhi Polytechnic and then, in , moved to London where he became a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. At the  Summer Olympics in London, Kar entered as a competitor for Great Britain and won the silver medal for his work entitled The Stag. He returned to West Bengal in and was then elected as Principal of the Government College of Art & Craft.

Kar sculpted with a variety of materials including wood, terracotta, stone, and metal. He was initially trained in an academic and representational style but also produced work of a more abstract nature.

Renowned Indian sculptor, Chintamoni Kar was born on this day, 19 April, Born and brought up in Kharagpur, West Bengal, he was trained at the Indian Society of Oriental Art run by Abanindranath Tagore and learnt the art of sculpting from Giridhari Mahapatra and Victor Giovanelli. Chintamoni Kar

Chintamoni Kar, one of the foremost modern sculptors of India, was born on 19 April in Kharagpur.

He trained initially in sculpture with Giridhari Mahapatra, a traditional Oriya sthapati or temple-carver, and learnt painting under Kshitindranath Mazumdar at the Indian Society of Oriental Art, Calcutta.

His exposure to Western art in Paris in , however, transformed his outlook, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière, and at the atelier of Italian sculptor Victor Giovanelli.

Kar’s subsequent disenchantment with the Bengal School was followed by ten productive years in England, during which he made his award-winning sculpture Skating the Stag, , displayed at the 14th Olympic exhibition in London. Born at Khargapur in West Bengal, Prof. Chintamoni Kar received his training in sculptural art, painting and conservation in Calcutta, Paris, London and Brussels. Beginning his career as a teacher in school, lecturer in art and sculpture at University of Calcutta, Delhi Polytechnic, Chelsa school of Art, London he served for a long period of seventeen years as the Principal of the Govt. College of Art & Craft, Calcutta. He had also the additional charge of the Keeper, Arts & Crafts, Indian Museum. Prof. Kar was elected member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and the International Institute for Conservation of historic and artistic work, London. His awards include Padmabhusan by the President of India; Deshikottama by the Viswabharati University and (Honoris Causa) by the Rabindra Bharati University.
