Formed by singer/guitarist Tracyanne Campbell, percussionist/singer John Henderson and bassist Gavin Dunbar, Camera Obscura were releasing their early singles on miniscule Glaswegian indie labels before they’d even settled on a full time line-up. After David Skirving joined the band on lead guitar, the band released their first two singles “Park And Ride” and “Your Sound” in These singles made them a respected name in the Scottish indie scene right off the bat, but the band wouldn’t release any other material until Their singles and live shows had given them a high profile fan in the form of Belle And Sebastien singer Stuart Murdoch, and he lent his considerable talents to them by producing their debut album “Biggest Bluest Hi Fi” that year.
The album was a huge cult hit, garnering the support of Radio One legend John Peel and appearing in several end of year “Best-Of” lists. In , the band’s second album “Underachievers Please Try Harder” was followed by their first full tours of Britain, Ireland and the United States, all countries that would fall for Camera Obscura’s immense amount of charm

The band forms in Glasgow (Scotland) in , when Tracyanne, John and Gavin started to meet at Gavin’s parents’ cellar to write songs and rehearse. At first, David Skirving helped them with the guitars.
In March, the Scottish label Andmoresound releases the band’s debut single, “Park ride”. This single appears only on vinyl and is quickly sold out. At the end of the year comes “Your sound”, the band’s second single, this time on vinyl and CD, again released by Andmoresound. On these two first singles the drums are played by Richard Colburn (BELLE AND SEBASTIAN); both of them are compiled on the CD mini-album “Rare UK Bird”, released by the Japanese label Quattro. During this time the band plays live gigs at several clubs in their city, playing along with SNOW PATROL at the Maryhill Community Central Halls.

A Brief History of Camera ObscuraCamera Obscura started in Tracyanne, John and Gavin started playing together in Gavin's parent's cellar with no drummer. They were soon joined by a guitarist called David Skirving. They recorded the 'Park and Ride' and 'Your Sound' singles for Andmoresound in Glasgow and mini album 'Rare UK Bird' for Quattro in Japan.
Richard Colburn took on drum duties live with the band and played on the 'Your Sound' single until Lee joined the band in During this time they played live shows at Glasgow's 13th Note, Hyndland Church Hall, Nice n' Sleazy's, King Tut's. They also supported Snow Patrol in the Maryhill Community Central Halls and played at the Bowlie Weekender in Camber Sands. David left the band to work on his own, (forming California Snow Story) and was replaced by Kenny. Lindsay Boyd (of Andmoresound) joined on keyboards.
