Amira Jarmakani

Amira Jarmakani is an Assistant Professor of Women's Studies at Georgia State University. Her areas of specialization include transnational feminisms, visual culture, Arab American studies, as well as literatures of representation and the body. Dr. Jarmakani has served as a core organizer for AMWAJ: Arab Movement of Women Arising for Justice and she is a member of the Radical Arab Womens Activist Network
(RAWAN). Recent publications include articles entitled "Mobilizing the Politics of Invisibility in Arab American Feminist Discourse," and "Belly Dancing for Liberation: A Critical Interpretation of Reclamation Rhetoric in the American Belly Dance Community. Currently, she is writing a book entitled Disorienting America: The Nostalgic Allure of Veils, Harems, and Belly Dancers in U.S. Popular Culture.

Amira Jarmakani is an Associate Professor and Director of the Institute for Women`s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Georgia State University. She received her PhD from Emory University in the Graduate Institute of Liberal Arts (Cultural Studies) with a graduate certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies, and her BA from Duke University in English with secondary teacher certification. She is the author of An Imperialist Love Story: Desert Romances and the War on Terror (NYU, ) and Imagining Arab Womanhood: The Cultural Mythology of Veils, Harems, and Belly Dancers in the US (Palgrave Macmillan, ), which won the National Women’s Studies Association Gloria E. Amira Jarmakani works on questions of race, gender, ethnicity and representation in U.S. popular culture. Her most recent book, An Imperialist Love Story: Desert Romances and the War on Terror (NYU Press, ), demonstrates how desire animates contemporary U.S. imperialism. Investigating the increased popularity of desert romances concurrent with the war on terror, the book demonstrates love to be a salient lens through which to understand how the war on terror works and how it perseveres. Her first book, Imagining Arab Womanhood, analyzes orientalist representations of Arab and Muslim womanhood in varied contexts, such as the Chicago World’s Fair, early twentieth century tobacco advertisements, contemporary advertisements and photographs, and the contemporary “American belly dance” movement. Looking at photographic albums and advertisements featuring belly dancers, veiled women, and harem imagery in comparative historical contexts, the book argues that they offer a shorthand for communicating social anxieties about expansionism, modernity, and the loss of the frontier at t

Biography of Martin Garrix
Early Life and Passion for MusicMartijn Garritsen, known by his stage name Martin Garrix, was born on May 14, , in Amstelveen, Netherlands. He developed a passion for music at the young age of four when he started learning the guitar.
