Shunryu Suzuki (鈴木 俊隆 Suzuki Shunryū, dharma name Shōgaku Shunryū 祥岳俊隆) (May 18, - December 4, ) was a Sōtō Zen priest born in the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan. Suzuki was occasionally mistaken for the Zen scholar D.T. Suzuki, to which Suzuki would reply, "No, he's the big Suzuki, I'm the little Suzuki."[1]

Shunryu Suzuki was born May 18, His father, Butsumon Sogaku Suzuki, was almost fifty at the time and was the head abbot of a small Soto Zen temple. His mother Yone was the daughter of a priest and had been divorced from her first husband for being too independent. Shunryu grew up with an older half brother from his mother's first marriage and two younger sisters.

His father's temple, Shogan-ji, was located near Hiratsuka, a city on Sagami Bay about fifty miles southwest of Tokyo. The temple income was small and the family had to be very thrifty.

When Suzuki entered school he became aware that his family was very poor. Suzuki was sensitive and kind but prone to quick bursts of anger. The other boys ridiculed him for his shaved head and for being th

Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, a Japanese Zen priest belonging to the Soto lineage, came to San Francisco in at the age of fifty-four. Already a respected Zen master in Japan, he was impressed by the seriousness and quality of "beginner's mind" among Americans he met who were interested in Zen and decided to settle here. As more and more people of non-Japanese background joined him in meditation, the San Francisco Zen Center came into being and he was its first abbot. Under his tutelage, Zen Center grew into City Center, Green Gulch Farm, and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. He was undoubtedly one of the most influential Zen teachers of his time.

th of May , the year of the dragon and the 37th year in the reign of Emperor Meiji, Shunryu Suzuki is born at Shogan-ji temple. Shunryu Suzuki was born as Toshitaka Suzuki, in a small village near Hiratsuka in Kanagawa Prefecture. His father, Sogaku Suzuki, was head abbot of the temple. His mother was the daughter of a Zen priest. At birth, he is given the Buddhist name Shunryu (Excellent Emergence) by his father.

In Suzuki started to train with a former disciple of his father, Gyokujun So-on Suzuki. So-on was Sogaku’s adopted son, and abbot of Sokagu’s former temple Zoun-in. After one year, is ordained as a novice monk by Gyokujun So-on, and is given his second Buddhist name, Shogaku (Auspicious Peak) – but he also received a nickname from So-on – Crooked Cucumber – because of his forgetful and unpredictable nature. In , So-on was made head of a second temple, called Rinso-in. Shunryu followed him there. During the next years, So-on  sent him to train with a Rinzai master. There Shunryu studied a very different kind of Zen, one that promoted the attainment of satori through the concentration on koans through zazen. 

Shunryu Suzuki

Shunryu Suzuki (b. , †) was an influential and world-renowned Japanese master in the Soto lineage of Zen Buddhism. His teacher was Gyokujun, who was also a student of Suzuki's father. Shunryu began his training at a very early age. At the age of 30, he received permission to accept and teach students in his turn. During World War II, he was the leader of a pacifist movement in Japan.

Shunryu Suzuki was instrumental in establishing Zen in the West. In , he came from Japan to the U.S. and founded the San Francisco Zen Center and later the Tassajara Zen Center, the first Zen monastery outside of Asia. Harmony with reality is at the center of Shunryu Suzuki's teachings. He explains that if we separate ourselves from our ego-centered view we can bring our lives into harmony with reality and experience liberation in the midst of our everyday activities.
