In the 60's he provided a platform for international evangelists like Gordon Lindsay, T.L. Osborne and others seeking to carry out evangelistic work in Nigeria.
In the 70's, he became the father of the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement that emerged in the nation's campuses; in the 80's up to his passage in Jan. 13, , he concentrated on teaching prophetic truths about the Kingdom of God and the emergence of the end-time overcomer comp Sydney Granville Elton was a man who believed he had an apostolic message for the church in Nigeria and who stopped at nothing to deliver it. He played the most significant role in shaping Pentecostalism in Nigeria during its first half century. Pa Sydney Elton was a missionary to Nigeria who later became arguably the leading apostolic voice in Nigeria in the 20th century.
The call
He was born in England. In , Pa Elton began to perceive his call to ministry after reading a book by Mary Slessor. Before he got the call to missions, there was a burning desire in his heart for the gifts and manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the church.
He later joined the Apostolic Church in England where he learned about the gifts and manifestations of the Holy Spirit. God began to speak to him about his call to Nigeria. God even told him the exact place he was to go - Ilesa. He was so sure of his call that he named his dog, Ilesa before leaving England.
Answering the call
Pa Elton arrived in Nigeria, specifically Ilesa in Elton’s mission was clear to him. He was to raise leaders, preserve the gains of the revival that broke out in and set a foundation of sound doctrines for the rising Nigerian church. Pa Elton argued that the practice of blessing water encouraged many to place their faith in “holy water” rather than on the word of God.

And since that time right up to his eventual home-call 50 years later, Pa Elton has always been at the centre of revival, playing one key role or the other. He had the opportunity of being part of the on-going revival at Ilesha (of the Joseph Ayo Babalola fame). He was also instrumental to the advent of the latter rain revival of the early 50's by providing an inroad for the revivalists to come into the country. In the wake of the evangelistic move of the 60's, he was also there, providing a platform for major international preachers and evangelists like Gordon Lindsay, T.L. Osborne and so many others including foreign missions that were willing to sponsor evangelistic work in Africa. He was thus a channel of financial provision for many indigenous missionaries and evangelists.
