Academy Award-nominated director Brett Morgen’s authorized Kurt Cobain documentary, Montage of Heck, airs May 4 on HBO. The first trailer for the project that saw the Nirvana frontman’s widow, Courtney Love, and their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, serve as executive producer and features, according to a press release, “dozens of Nirvana songs and performances as well as previously unheard Cobain originals,” and “no-holds-barred access to Kurt Cobain’s archives, home to his never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, personal archives, family archives, and songbooks,” released today.
Notably absent from the doc is Dave Grohl, Nirvana’s drummer, who, per Morgen, was interviewed for the feature but too close to deadline to be incorporated. “We had a locked print and trying to re-edit a film with a new interview in 10 days is kind of difficult,” the director said at the premiere. “This is the picture I wanted—I didn’t want there to be a lot of people in the film. I hope we’ll see a version [with Grohl’s interview] sometime.”
