The prolific American inventor Lee De Forest () is one of several pioneers of radio development. De Forest experimented with receiving long-distance radio signals and in patented an electronic device named the audion. Until this time, the radion was considered little more than "wireless telagraphy," since it sent Morse code (dots and dashes) instead of conveying actual sound. De Forest's new three-electrode (triode) vacuum tube boosted radio waves as they were received and made possible what was then called "wireless telephony," which allowed the human voice, music, or any broadcast signal to be heard loud and clear.

Lee de Forest Invents the Triode, the First Widely Used Electronic Device that Can Amplify
In American inventor Lee de Forest introduced a third electrode called the grid into the vacuum tube. The resulting triode could be used both as an amplifier and a switch. de Forest marketed his triode under the name Audion.
"The audion consisted of an evacuated glass tube containing three electrodes: a heated filament, a grid, and a plate.[4] It is important in the history of technology because it was the first widely used electronic device which could amplify; a small electrical signal applied to the grid could control a larger current flowing from the filament to plate.[4][5]
"The original triode Audion had more residual gas in the tube than later versions and vacuum tubes; the extra residual gas limited the dynamic range and gave the Audion non-linear characteristics and erratic performance.[1][7] Originally developed as a radio receiver detector[3] by adding a grid electrode to the Fleming valve, it found little use until its amplifying ability was recognized around by several researchers,[7][9]&n
Lee de Forest invented the three-element vacuum tube which became the basis of all electronic devices. He called it the Audion.
In the Nineteenth Century Thomas Edison noticed a blackening on the inside of his burning light bulb. He believed it to be caused by electrons and he named it the “Edison Effect.” Years later Ambrose Fleming who had worked for Edison and Marconi filed a patent for a tube or “valve” and used it as a rectifier to convert wireless code to a voltage that triggered a galvanometer to indicate messages visually. De Forest developed his own version of this tube, called it the Audion and used it to detect or receive code and voice messages: “The patentable differences between this invention and that of Fleming are de Forest’s addition of the second battery between the plate and the earphone, called a “B” battery, and the use of a telephone earphone instead of the galvanometer. These two very significant changes result in the “hearing” of a signal as opposed to Fleming’s “seeing” it using a visual indicator. These differences mean that only the de Forest version will be able to “hear” the audio from the imminent invention of the radiotelephone.” From the book,

This year () marks the th anniversary of Lee de Forest’s Audion or first vacuum tube triode (Figure 1). This was the most famous of de Forest’s patented inventions. This vast improvement upon John Ambrose Fleming’s valve changed the world like few other events since.

The “valve” was a vacuum tube diode that Fleming invented as a modification to an Edison light bulb by adding a second element to it. Lee de Forest’s triode or “Audion” as he called it ushered in the age of radio and electronic communications. The Audion detected radio signals, and then it could amplify them to produce audio. Finally, it served as the basis of an oscillator for the final transmission of signals.
This era of early radio was one in which only a few visionaries and promoters realized its great potential, and this fostered ferocious competition and frequent legal battles.
