Euclid – Biography, Geometry Treatises, Accomplishments, Elements
Euclid The Father of Geometry, Euclid wrote a book called the Elements, likely the most famous textbook in history.
Euclid, also known as the Father of Geometry, was considered one of the greatest mathematicians of Greek times. He etched his name into the annals of history by authoring a mathematical textbook titled the Elements. The book, which contains a host of groundbreaking mathematical theorems and proofs in geometric algebra and among others, is undoubtedly the most famous math textbook of all time.
But who really was Euclid, and what were his major contributions to mathematics?

Euclid of Alexandria
Not much younger than these [pupils of Plato] is Euclid, who put together the "Elements", arranging in order many of Eudoxus's theorems, perfecting many of Theaetetus's, and also bringing to irrefutable demonstration the things which had been only loosely proved by his predecessors. This man lived in the time of the first Ptolemy; for Archimedes, who followed closely upon the first Ptolemy makes mention of Euclid, and further they say that Ptolemy once asked him if there were a shorted way to study geometry than the Elements, to which he replied that there was no royal road to geometry. He is therefore younger than Plato's circle, but older than Eratosthenes and Archimedes; for these were contemporaries, as Eratosthenes somewhere say
Euclid (c. BC BC) Greek Mathematician considered the “Father of Geometry”. His textbook ‘Elements’ remained a highly influential mathematics teaching book until the late 19th Century and is one of the most widely published books in the world. It has had a lasting influence on the sciences -, especially in mathematics. In a list by Michael H. Hast Euclid is considered to be 14th most influential person in history.
Euclid was born in the mid 4th Century BC and lived in Alexandria; he was mostly active during the reign of Ptolemy I (BC) His name Euclid means “renowned, glorious” he is also referred to as Euclid of Alexandria.
Details about Euclid’s life are sparse the main biographical information was not written until many centuries later, e.g. Proclus c. AD. Proclus writes about Euclid:
“Not much younger than these [pupils of Plato] is Euclid, who put together the Elements, arranging in order many of Eudoxuss theorems, perfecting many of Theaetetuss, and also bringing to irrefutable demonstration the things which had been only loosely proved by his predecessors. Euclid has remained one of the founding mathematicians. He contributed many things to geometry due to his keen interest. Due to this reason, the world knows him as the father of geometry. His name is also present in the modern geometry book as “Euclidean geometry”.
Biography – Life Span
Euclid was born in BCE in Alexandria, Egypt. Although much of the information about him is uncertain, therefore, most precise references have been used to assume as correct. Arab scholars write that his father’s name was Naucrates and he was born in Tyre.
He most probably gained basic education at the Academy of Plato – the Greek philosopher. At that time, Ptolemy-I ruled Egypt, since it became part of Greece under the dominance of Alexander the Great.
He studied geometry and the earlier works on it by mathematicians like Eudoxus, Theaetetus, and Phillip of Opus. He compiled their theorems and tried to prove them. He was also asked by Ptolemy-I that if geometry could be learned more easily? The Euclid would reply, “There is no royal road to geometry.” This was pointed to Euclid’s exclusive work – Elements. Proclus – the last of the Greek philosophers write that Euclid wrote his treatise on t
