Ellery queen biography

History

Ellery Queen&#;s Mystery Magazine came on the scene in the fall of under the ownership of Lawrence E. Spivak of The Mercury Press (who subsequently founded and hosted the popular TV show Meet the Press). It was heralded as the brainchild of Ellery Queen himself, really the two-cousin writing team of Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee. Dannay assumed primary editorial responsibility for the magazine, serving as its editor-in-chief from until his death in He sent the magazine into the world with this message to readers: “This first issue is frankly experimental. Our belief that a large public exists which impatiently awaits such publication can only be confirmed by that public.” Response to the magazine was enthusiastic, with the first issue selling over 90, copies. EQMM quickly established a place as the leading periodical in the genre—a place it has retained for more than three-quarters of a century.

Dannay explained his manifesto for Ellery Queen&#;s Mystery Magazine as being to &#;raise the sights of mystery writers generally to a genuine literary form,&#; to &#;encourage good writing among our colleagues by offering a practical market not otherwise available

Ellery Queen Biography

Ellery Queen is a pseudonym used by two cousins, Frederick Dannay and Manfred B. Lee to write detective fiction. Some of the later Ellery Queen novels were ghost-written by Theodore Sturgeon, Jack Vance, and other prominent writers.

In their successful series of novels, Ellery Queen is not only the name of the author, but also the detective-hero of the stories. The writing team also wrote four novels under the name of Barnaby Ross about a Shakespearian actor/detective named Drury Lane. These novels were later reiussed under the Ellery Queen byline.

For a while in the s "Ellery Queen" and "Barnaby Ross" staged a series of public debates in which one cousin impersonated Queen and the other impersonated Ross.

There were many paperback novels written by "Ellery Queen" in the s that did not feature the detective Ellery Queen. For instance, three novels featuring the governor's "troubleshooter" Mike McCall -- The Campus Murders (, written by Gil Brewer); The Black Hearts Mu

Ellery Queen

( - )

Pseudonym for Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee (Their original names were Daniel Nathan and Manford Lepofski but they changed them as young men). They were cousins and were educated together at Brooklyn Boys High School. In they created 'Ellery Queen', a writer of crime stories featuring a detective with the name 'Ellery Queen' (quite confusing). They also wrote four novels about a detective named Drury Lane under the pseudonym 'Barnaby Ross'. They allowed the Ellery Queen name to be used as a house name for a number of novels written by other authors.

Ellery Queen is a unique fictional detective. Created by cousins Frederic Dannay and Manfred Lee as an entry in a writing contest, he is regarded by many as the definitive American whodunit celebrity, rivaling Nero Wolfe as the logical successor to the Master, Sherlock Holmes.

The cousins wrote dozens of books, and possibly hundreds of radio scripts, about the author and amatuer sleuth who shared an apartment with his Dad, Inspector Richard Queen of the New York Police Homicide squad. On stage, in the movies, and on television, the EQ legacy was continued, though

Ellery Queen the Character

Ellery Queen was the main detective character in over thirty crime novels and short story collections from – He first appeared in The Roman Hat Mystery in He was the adult son of Inspector Richard Queen of the New York Police Homicide Squad and was an author who spent most of his time with his nose stuck in a book. His father leaned on him to help solve the murder.

It is hard to describe Ellery with one description as he changed over the course of the series. He began as a bookworm assisting his father in New York. His mother had passed away and there was no interest in women, in fact they both lived a decidedly bachelor lifestyle wanting only to spend their evenings in the apartment they shared.

In the late thirties, Ellery, like his authors, moved to Hollywood to begin writing movie scripts. He no longer assisted his father on police cases. And he found
