Over the weekend, the internet exploded with reports that legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin and others have convinced experts that they encountered aliens by passing lie detector tests.
The story was irresistible to true believers and skeptics alike, and coverage topped the Google News and Google Trends science corners.
So did Buzz Aldrin really see a UFO?
The story was originally published as an "exclusive" by British tabloid the Daily Star.
"Aldrin has always maintained he spotted a UFO on the way to the moon," the article said. It quoted the astronaut as saying, "There was something out there that was close enough to be observed, sort of L-shaped."
This quote likely comes from a mids TV documentary called First on the Moon: The Untold Story, which claimed that Aldrin saw a UFO during the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
At best, this is technically true. However, Aldrin and others have debunked any speculation that he actually witnessed evidence of aliens numerous times. For example, Aldrin addressed the sighting in a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session in
The astronaut explained to readers that he did spot a weird, moving light during the Apollo 11 journey but sa
No, Buzz Aldrin did not see an alien on his trip to the moon
Yes, legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin saw something outside his ship while en route to the moon in , but it wasn't an alien, despite claims from a British tabloid and a "scientific" organization.
On Sunday, the Daily Starposted an "exclusive" story claiming that the legendary astronaut recently "passed a lie detector test" that somehow confirmed that he encountered an alien during Apollo
"The panels would have had the same momentum as the rest of the spacecraft and would have followed them along (generally) toward the moon," she said.
It could also have been the rocket they had separated from. "It was not an alien," Aldrin said in a Reddit post in
Schierholz said the word "unidentified" in UFO can also be problematic, as it doesn't have to mean "of alien origin": "While engineers and scientists can be reasonably confident what was seen was one of the panels, to an engineer/scientist, it is still technically 'unidentified' — hence the use of the terminology."
The Daily Star claimed the results of the test prove the astronauts were “completely convinced” the signs of

FACT CHECK: Did Buzz Aldrin Claim To Have Seen Aliens On The Moon?
A post shared on Facebook claims Astronaut Buzz Aldrin told NASA he saw aliens during his moonwalk, and a lie detector test allegedly proved this was true.
Verdict: False
While Aldrin did initially say he saw an unidentifiable object during the mission, he never claimed to have seen aliens during his moonwalk. He and NASA later clarified that what he saw was likely panels from the astronauts’ spacecraft.
Fact Check:
Aldrin, now 88, was the second person to step foot on the surface of the moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission. An image on Facebook claims that Aldrin told NASA that while he was on the space mission, he saw aliens. The post further claims that Aldrin later took a lie detector test, which he passed.
Aldrin has said he saw an unidentified object during his moonwalk, according to NASA’s Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI), but both NASA and Aldrin have clarified that what Aldrin saw was not extraterrestrial.
“On Apollo 11 in route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us,” Aldrin wrote in a &n
